Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations in the wake of his team's loss in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the third Test, where England are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley made 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go 2-0 down.

The team subsequently went on a holiday to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the guidance from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket late on Saturday was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in a short spell – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional target of 435.

Consequently, the home team require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide likely secures questions about his short-term place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion his teammate is under the microscope comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is talk from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature on Ollie amongst the players," Crawley finished.
