TikTok Grants Users Control to Limit AI-Generated Media in Personal Streams

TikTok is introducing a fresh option that permits them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made content appearing in their timelines. This step comes as the platform announced that it presently contains in excess of 1 billion AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The update is in a pilot phase over the next few weeks before a full-scale launch. This shift aligns with a surge in AI content, spurred by emerging AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly one in 10 of the fastest-growing content creators on another major platform only show content made by AI. A considerable share of this content is considered mass-produced AI material, a term for substandard, bulk-generated content that is typically nonsensical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that a lot of users appreciate content created using AI tools, including digital art to informative clips, and we intend to offer the community the option to see more or less of that, according to their own choices,” commented a spokesperson.

AI on the Platform

The platform announced that there are currently 1.3bn videos on its app identified as AI-generated. In total, over 100 m pieces of content are added to the app each day, making clips made by AI a relatively small portion of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Viewers will be in a position to decrease or raise the volume of artificial media they view by using the “manage topic” option in the app and picking AI-made media. Other topics that are already be adjusted under the tool cover current affairs, fashion, beauty, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

Its policies mandate users to tag lifelike artificially created content, and it prohibits malicious fake videos of public figures or crisis events. Any believable artificial content that is not labeled can be removed under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the app will now add an AI-generated tag to content created with its built-in AI features, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing AI-generated material. This measure is intended to help prevent users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is additionally introducing a $2m educational fund for professionals and groups to produce learning resources about using AI responsibly. This program will support non-profit groups specializing in training coding and technology.

Platform Protection

TikTok has supported its moderation strategy, during debate over intentions to make redundant a large number of content moderators in the UK. It is expected to eliminate 439 jobs in its trust and safety department in London, with labor groups and internet security professionals expressing worry that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A trust and safety lead explained that staff-based oversight would remain essential, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by eliminating the most distressing content prior to it has to be seen by people. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content seen by human moderators over the past year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have humans as integral to the approach, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
